The humble mechanical hard drive might not get as much love atomic number 3 a good NVMe SSD, just they aren't consigned to the scrap heaps just all the same. As information storage needs stay on to rise, so does the need for ever-larger drives to store it all connected. Later this calendar month, Western Digital will start shipping 20TB hard drives featuring OptiNAND technology. Hoarders take up note.

Hybrid hard drives with aboard flash are nothing new. Seagate has been devising them for years but Western Integer's approach is different. Rather than cache actual data, WD's OptiNAND stores metadata, or essentially, data all but the hard drive's information.

One and only might ask Drachma to be a improved choice for this, but WD's manipulation of flash provides several advantages. Flash is cheaper than Drachma, it's not-volatile, and storing metadata in a hoard boosts overall performance A it's better at handling latency-sensitive operations that hard drives aren't so great at. Keeping metadata in its own cache should also seduce it easier for WD to make even larger capacity drives.

As is often the case, untested storage technologies are intentional for enterprise applications and that's the case here. But Information technology's non a stretch to say that NAS and screen background versions will follow sooner rather than late.

Mechanical tough drives are here to stay. Just think out, with 20TB on hand you might be able to store your entire Steam library along one drive! That huge Call of Duty: Mod Warfare install has to be unbroken somewhere. Western Digital believes its OptiNAND drives should reach capacities of capable 50TB by the closing of the decade, so you can drop your Epic or Ubisoft libraries on thither too. Eastern Samoa always, information technology's worth mentioning how important it is to backup your valuable data. 20TB, non to mention 50TB would be a fate to lose in one bump off!

Chris Szewczyk

Chris' play experiences go on back to the nineties when helium conned his parents into buying an 'educational PC' that was handily overpowered to play Doom and Tie Fighter. He developed a love of extreme overclocking that destroyed his nest egg despite the cheaper hardware connected bid via his job at a PC store. To afford more LN2 he began moonlighting as a referee for VR-Partition before jumping the fence to work for MSI Australia. Since then, he's gone back to fourth estate, sky-high reviewing the latest and greatest components for PC & Tech Authority, Microcomputer Powerplay and currently Australian Microcomputer magazine and PC Gamer. Chris standing puts far too many hours into Borderlands 3, always pains to become a much economic killer.
